KUWAIT PETROLEUM CORPORATION

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) is one of the world’s major oil and gas companies. KPC faced major challenges in changing regulatory and market environments.


We designed two-tier leadership development program targeting 50 CEOs/MDs and 350 Senior Directors/Managers drawn from across KPC’s subsidiaries. The program ran over the course of three years in partnership with London Business School (LBS) to achieve:
 

  • Enhanced Adaptive Capacity: Creating A New Strategy: to shift from an oil company to energy company.

  • Think ‘K’: By having a common understanding of the overall mission within the context of the holding company and creating synergy among the different subsidiaries.

  • Breaking Down Silos: High Performance Teams with ability to influence and work in cross-functional teams and networks breaking down silos.

  • Change Leaders: With the ability to manage and lead not just the process side, but also the ‘people’ side of change.

  • Distinguish Leadership from Authority and between Technical and Adaptive Challenges.

  • Acquire leadership tools and techniques to identify pressing challenges facing KPC.

ABU DHABI GOVERNMENT

On August, 1st, 2007, the Abu Dhabi Government has published a comprehensive policy agenda outlining its key goals and initiatives. Based on this agenda, the Government revealed its ambitious 2030 Economic Vision.
 

Over the course of 4 years, I worked with the Executive Council in designing and delivering a comprehensive leadership development program for its 115 Chief Executives and 450 senior directors and managers to achieve:
 

  • Enhanced adaptive capacity: diversifying Abu Dhabi economy by reducing reliance on the oil sector as a source of economic activity over time.

  • Enhanced Adaptive Capacity: creating a culture of performance and accountability.

  • Identify the Adaptive Challenges & Naming the Work Ahead

  • Create a shared language around leadership and awareness on their collective Leadership challenges.

  • Advance the value of individual and collective responsibility.

  • Create trust among participants and their respective government departments and teams.

  • Achieve greater cross-departmental collaboration.

UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (UNDP)

UNDP is the United Nations lead agency on international development, works in 170 countries and territories to countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

 

Ghaleb was asked to deliver an adaptive leadership program for members of the Iraqi Parliament which ran for three consecutive days in the Jordanian Capital Amman in partnership with Jordanian Government. The program covered the following:

​

  • The nature of Leadership and Authority and how to exercise leadership without Authority. 

  • What it takes to mobilise people and resources in a constantly changing world.

  • Distinguishing Technical problems from Adaptive Challenges.

  • Distinguishing Self from Role; Identifying the strengths and blind spots of the Self

  • Change Leaders: Manage and lead not just the process side, but also the ‘people’ side of change.

  • Learn to diagnose the adaptations and competencies needed to deal with emerging challenges and opportunities.

WORLD FOOD PROGRAM

The World Food Program is the world’s largest humanitarian organization.

 

Ghaleb was asked to deliver a keynote speech to kick off the “Leading for Zero Hunger” leadership program that WFP launched to support their new and ambitious Zero-Hunger Challenge.

 

The program was designed for WFE’s regional directors, their deputies and country directors and their deputies with the objectives of:

  • Align individual purpose to WFP’s Mission

  • Understand & communicate the Strategic Objectives

  • Make our Mission visible in everyday actions

  • Be a force for positive change

  • Make the Mission inspiring to our team

  • Setting the Context for Culture Change at WFP

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY - DUBAI GOVERNMENT

To Enhance the personal Leadership and People Management skills of 7 CEOs, 21 Directors and 60 High potentials within CDA. As part of the program, we designed and delivered a holistic and customized one-year Leadership program.

The program helped CDA and the participants:

 

  • Helping advance CDA’s New Strategic direction to shift its business model from service delivery to service supervision.

  • Internalize a new set of ideas and tools to mobilize consequential change.

  • Develop a portfolio of new strategies to tackle toughest issues.

  • Greater confidence to communicate, an ability to influence & motivate, to delegate effectively and demand responsibility and accountability.

  • Assume accountability for results. 

  • Become effective agents of change in their respective departments

  • Motivated staff who are engaged and pro-active contributors to their teams

MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCES & EMIRATISATION - UAE

We designed and delivered a one-year comprehensive Leadership program to enhance the personal leadership and people management skills of 50 senior and high potentials within Ministry.

The program helped the Ministry and participants to:

 

  • Improve their Management and Leadership skills & roles and how they impact subordinates.

  • Demand and assume accountability & responsibility for peak results.

  • Create high performance teams by aligning behavior with motivations and reprimands.

  • Create engagement by learning how to conduct performance appraisal meetings, communicate difficult decisions, delegate effectively.

  • Learn to diagnose the adaptations and competencies needed to deal with emerging challenges and opportunities.

  • Gain new tools and strategies to move their organization off the status quo and create the Future.

  • Develop a portfolio of new strategies to tackle toughest issues.

ACUMEN FUND NEW YORK

In collaboration with Acumen Fund New York, I designed and delivered the Adaptive Leadership Module which is one of the foundational modules of Acumen Fellows Program, often challenging the Fellows’ understanding of leadership and authority and how they can create change.

​

This module also serves a powerful role in group formation, helping Fellows show up in more real and authentic ways with one another. Over the course of 7 years, I delivered the Adaptive leadership module for more than 120 of the Pakistan Fellows program.

 

These intensive workshops runs for 3 days and delves into:

​

  • The nature of Leadership and Authority and how to exercise leadership without Authority. 

  • What it takes to mobilise people and resources in a constantly changing world.

  • Distinguishing Technical problems from Adaptive Challenges.

  • Distinguishing Self from Role; Identifying the strengths and blind spots of the Self

  • Change Leaders: Manage and lead not just the process side, but also the ‘people’ side of change.

  • Learn to diagnose the adaptations and competencies needed to deal with emerging challenges and opportunities.

DUBAI ELECTRICITY AND WATER AUTHORITY (DEWA)

We designed and delivered a Women Leadership Program to Enhance the Leadership and People Management skills of 60 High potentials women leaders within Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

The program helped participants to:

 

  • Identifying and prioritizing the adaptive challenges facing DEWA;

  • Understanding the relationship between leadership and authority, exercising influence, and managing the individual and institutional dynamics of change.

  • Enhance their People Management and Supervisory Skills by setting clear objectives & communicate them.

  • Overcoming the barriers to communication in a hierarchical relationship

  • People’s motivation and examining different ways of influencing subordinates.

  • Understand performance management as a dynamic and continuous process.

  • The adoption of a positive attitude with regard to new challenges and changes

GOVERNMENT OF RAS AL KHAIMAH 

In collaboration with the UAE’s Ministry of Presidential Affairs we designed a comprehensive leadership program for 120 executives drawn from different government departments and agencies in Ras Al Khaimah.

 

This program was designed to enhance the Management and Leadership skills by:

​

  • Improving their Management and Leadership skills & roles and how they impact subordinates.

  • Demanding and assume accountability & responsibility for peak results.

  • Creating high performance teams by aligning behavior with motivations and reprimands.

  • Creating engagement by learning how to conduct performance appraisal meetings, communicate difficult decisions, delegate effectively.

  • Learning how to diagnose the adaptations and competencies needed to deal with emerging challenges and opportunities.

  • Gaining new tools and strategies to move their organization of off the status quo and create the Future.

  • Develop a portfolio of new strategies to tackle toughest issues.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL - DUBAI GOVERNMENT

To assist the Executive Council of Dubai Government in translating their newly designed competency framework into human behaviors and attitudes.

 

We designed and delivered a 10-day program to cover People Management and Leadership skills to support TEC’s newly introduced competencies.

 

The program helped participants to:

​

  • Create high performance teams by aligning behavior with motivations and reprimands.

  • Create engagement by learning how to conduct performance appraisal meetings, communicate difficult decisions, delegate effectively.

  • Make more progress than they have so far on the most important and difficult challenges facing them and their organization.

  • What is happening in Executive Council and Dubai? What are the forces working to keep us in the status quo?

  • What kind of leadership behavior is required from us? What does sustainability look like?

EMIRATES COMPETITIVENESS COUNCIL (EEC) UAE GOVERNMENT 

We designed a program to assist Emirates Competitiveness Council create bonding among their employees.

 

We design emotional intelligence program for 20 middle and senior management professionals and covered the following: 

​

  • Understand the importance of their emotions on their relationships and communications with others.

  • Understand the different dimensions of emotional intelligence and how these effect their professional lives.

  • Be more confident in managing their emotions in a positive manner.

  • The adaptive function of emotions, emotions process: reactions map.

  • The consequence thought: What is the impact on myself and on others?

  • The behavioral channel, the cognitive channel and the physiological channel

  • Direct and indirect measures for emotions
